So as I read the rules, the answers to your questions are: There may be expansions later where a tapped champion may mean something due to new rules/cards/etc.There are cards that allow you to prepare champions, meaning you can use the ability more than once per turn.A way to track which abilities you've already used.So what is the point of even tapping them? According to a FAQ I saw from the game designer it has three purposes. Tapped Champions become untapped at the end of your turn, so they are still available to guard on your opponent's turn. Now this is interesting, because I thought the same when I first played, but I realized I was wrong about the tapped Champions. When tapped, can Champions and Guards still be targeted by attacks? We assumed yes, but the attacker had the opportunity to ignore them and hit the player directly.Īnd second, assuming the above is correct, does the attacker have to attack tapped Guards before attacking tapped Champions? Or do they get free choice if their opponent is totally tapped? I do, however, have a rules question about the Champions and Guards. Eager to see what the character packs add to it. That said, they easily could have released a Star Realms expansion with tappable bases instead of reskinning the whole game.īut for <$20, it's got cool artwork and a fun theme and I'm satisfied with the purchase. The ability to tap them for their ability, thus sacrificing their protection for the turn, is very clever. We played this for the first time last night, actually.Īnd you're right, it is basically identical to Star Realms with the exception of how these Champions and Guards work for you. Have you ever had a re-theme improve a game for you a lot? With no mechanical changes? Or maybe just a few? And it’s only 20 bucks for the base game! If you like deck builders, you’ll probably like this. If you didn’t like Star Realms because of the theme, you’ll probably like this. If you liked Star Realms, you’ll probably like this. I haven’t played with a player count of more than 2 yet, but I look forward to trying it out. DC Deck Builder does this to a certain extent with its hero cards, and I can’t help but wonder if Marvel Legendary could do the same type of thing. Something to make you feel different than everyone else. And the character decks? That’s something I think that a lot of deck builders could use. It feels like what EPIC: The Card Game should have been. Yet the facts that they are warriors for your side instead of bases gives the game a much different feel. In Hero Realms, instead of bases, you have champions who work the same way. Some your opponent could ignore when they attacked, while others HAD to be attacked before they could get to you. They offered a variety of bonuses, some attack, some health, and some resources. In Star Realms, you had bases you would buy and they would stay in front of you when they played. It is a re-theme, no doubt about it, but a few small changes really made it shine. I gave it a try, with and without the character packs and I’ve got to say that I was totally wrong about this game. I heard some praise after its release, especially for the character packs, and then got it as a gift. It didn’t seem worth spending the money on a game that I already more or less owned. When Hero Realms first came out on Kickstarter I looked at as just a fantasy re-theme of Star Realms (A game I enjoy a lot) and passed on it. r/tabletopgamedesign - Designer's subreddit.r/boardgameexchange - selling/buying/trading games.
